What is the difference between a junk yard and a landfill?

So the easiest answer is that the landfill is where garbage and waste is taken too as a junk yard is somewhere that you would take items collected for scrap before being reused, discarded or recycled. Let’s dive more into this, for example your car gets totaled but there is parts that are still salvageable, this is where a junk yard would come into place. The facility will then salvage any parts to be sold for use in operating vehicles while the scrap metal parts are sold to metal-recycling companies.

Typically you’ll make your trip to the landfill once, to dump your junk for us all to never see it again. A landfill consists of a large area with many holes to accommodate people’s unwanted treasures. Big holes are dug to bury these unwanted treasures, landfills are designed to break down waste, only to store it, however garbage at a landfill does decompose, it typically takes several years depending on the debris type. Landfills are built to concentrate the waste in compacted layers to reduce the volume and monitor the control of liquid and gaseous effluent in order to protect the environment and human health.

-Side bar, according to the EPA, of the 267.8 million tons of municipal solid waste generated by Americans only 94.2 million tons were recycled or composted in the year 2017. 66% of discarded paper and cardboard was recycled, 27% of glass and 8% of plastics were recycled. Landfills, junk yards, and recycling facilities can help save on natural resources, and by placing our waste in the correct receptacle bin we can help the landfill operate correctly without creating a hazard underneath the ground.
